An AC run capacitor gives the compressor and fan motors the phase shift they need to run smoothly. Its microfarad (µF) rating and voltage must match the original, because a wrong value can overheat the motor or compressor. A capacitor that is swollen, leaking or burnt, or a unit that hums but does not start, usually points to a failed capacitor.
Always switch off the power and discharge a capacitor before touching it. A dual capacitor lists two µF values, for example 35+5 µF, one for the compressor and one for the fan, so use the same pairing as the old one.
